Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 40 million to USD 200 million for a fermentation plant producing glutamic acid.

The benchmark plant capacity is 20,000 to 300,000 MT per year of glutamic acid.

The global glutamic acid market is estimated at approximately USD 8 billion to USD 9 billion in 2025–2026 and is expected to reach around USD 11 billion to USD 13 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of approximately 5% to 6%.

Flavor enhancers and monosodium glutamate account for approximately 60% to 70% of demand; food and feed amino acids represent 15% to 25%; and pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and specialty applications contribute around 10% to 15%. Industrial and other applications make up the remaining share.

Glutamic acid is manufactured primarily through submerged fermentation using Corynebacterium glutamicum at approximately 30 to 37 degree Celsius, followed by downstream recovery and isoelectric crystallization of L-glutamic acid.

Key feedstocks include a sugar source, such as cane molasses, beet molasses, or starch hydrolysate, together with a nitrogen source, such as ammonia or urea. These sugar and nitrogen feedstocks together represent approximately 45% to 60% of total raw material expense.

Seed and production fermenters, cell-separation equipment, and crystallization systems represent approximately 40% to 50% of the total glutamic acid plant setup cost.

The major cost drivers are sugar-based feedstock prices and fermentation efficiency. Sugar-based raw materials account for approximately 35% to 50% of variable operating expenses, making feedstock economics and fermentation yield important determinants of production cost.

China is the world's largest producer and exporter of glutamic acid, while other parts of Asia also represent important production centers.

Available grades include food grade, feed grade, technical grade, and premium-quality grades, depending on the intended application and required purity specifications.

Manufacturing requires effluent treatment systems capable of handling high-organic-load wastewater generated during fermentation and downstream processing. Plants supplying food applications must also comply with applicable food-additive regulations, including EU requirements for products marketed in Europe.
