Frequently Asked Questions

The suggestive CAPEX for establishing a gold manufacturing plant ranges from USD 5 million to USD 20 million, depending on production capacity, refining technology, required purity, LBMA accreditation, and automation levels.
A typical benchmark for a gold manufacturing facility is an annual refined gold production capacity of approximately 5 to 20 MT.
The global gold market is estimated to be worth around USD 350 billion to USD 400 billion and is projected to expand at a CAGR of approximately 3.5% to 4.5% through the early 2030s.
Jewelry fabrication accounts for approximately 45% to 50% of annual gold demand, while investment bars and coins contribute about 25% to 30%. Central bank reserves represent around 15% to 20%, and technology and electronics account for approximately 7% to 8%.
Gold concentrates are first smelted into Doré bars, which undergo Miller chlorination to achieve 995 to 996 fineness. For 9999 purity, the refined gold is formed into anodes and processed through the Wohlwill electrolytic method. Aqua regia refining can also produce gold with 999 to 9995 fineness.
The main feedstocks include Doré bars, which are semi-refined gold-silver alloys generally containing 70% to 95% gold, along with gold-bearing scrap materials.
Major processing equipment, such as induction furnaces, Miller chlorination units, Wohlwill electrolytic cells, aqua regia systems, and casting or minting machines, accounts for approximately 25% to 35% of total CAPEX.
The purchase cost of Doré bars and gold-bearing scrap is the primary operating expense and has the greatest influence on overall gold manufacturing costs.
Switzerland handles up to 70% of global gold processing through its major refining hub. Other important refining centers include South Africa, Japan, Germany, India, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia.
Common gold grades include 995 fineness with 99.5% purity, 9999 fineness with 99.99% purity, and 999 to 9995 fineness. Jewelry is also manufactured in different karat grades, including 24K, 22K, 18K, and 14K.
Gold refineries need caustic scrubbers to control chlorine emissions and systems to treat acid waste and nitrogen oxide fumes from aqua regia processing. LBMA accreditation is also required to participate in the wholesale bullion market.
