Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 8 million to USD 20 million for a 10,000 to 30,000 MT/year foundry (electric induction furnaces, sand molding lines, core-making machines, shakeout systems, shot blasting equipment, QC laboratory).
The benchmark plant capacity is 10,000 to 30,000 MT/year of finished grey cast iron castings.
The global grey cast iron market is valued at approximately USD 19-22 billion. It is expected to reach about USD 26-31 billion by the early 2030s, growing at a CAGR of around 3.5%-4.0%.
The main end-use segments are: Automotive components: approximately 40% of demand Industrial machinery and equipment: approximately 25% to 30% of demand Pipes, fittings, and municipal infrastructure: approximately 15% to 20% of demand Construction and agricultural equipment: approximately 8% to 12% of demand
Grey cast iron manufacturing follows a melt-mold-pour-finish process. The charge is melted using a cupola furnace or electric induction furnace at 1,400 degree Celsius to 1,500 degree Celsius, followed by composition adjustment, desulfurization, and inoculation. The molten metal is poured into green sand or chemically bonded sand molds, followed by shakeout, shot blasting, fettling, grinding, heat treatment, and machining.
The key feedstocks include pig iron, steel scrap, return scrap, ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, carbon raiser, foundry-grade silica sand, bentonite clay, coal dust, and inoculants. Pig iron represents 20% to 30% of total raw material cost, while combined ferroalloy costs represent 5% to 10% of total raw material expenditure.
Raw material and energy pricing are the major cost drivers. Pig iron, steel scrap, and ferroalloy costs together represent 50% to 65% of total variable OPEX, while energy accounts for approximately 15% to 20% of total OPEX.
China is the largest global producer, accounting for over 50% of world output. Other major producing regions include India, the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Japan. The report does not provide separate capacity shares for these regions.
Available grades include: ASTM A48 Class 20 to Class 40 (EN-GJL-150 to EN-GJL-250) ASTM A48 Class 45 to Class 60 (EN-GJL-300 to EN-GJL-350) Specialty alloyed grades such as Ni-Resist and Cr-alloyed grades The report does not provide specific purity specifications.
Grey cast iron manufacturing requires permits for particulate emissions, VOC emissions, noise, and industrial wastewater discharge. Stricter air quality regulations have increased emission control costs by approximately 15% to 20% in recent years.
