Frequently Asked Questions

Aerospace and defense applications account for 55% of hafnium carbide consumption, followed by nuclear energy at 25%. Cutting tools and hard coatings represent 15%, while research and specialised electronics contribute the remaining 5%.

Industrial production starts by dissolving hafnium chloride and citric acid in water and mixing the solution at elevated temperatures to form a uniform precursor gel through polycondensation. The gel is then pyrolyzed to produce monoclinic hafnia (HfO2), followed by heat treatment at temperatures of up to 1600 degree Celsius under inert or vacuum conditions to convert the oxide into high-purity hafnium carbide powder.

The supply chain depends on the availability of hafnium minerals, which are generally obtained as byproducts of zirconium refining. Hafnium chloride (HfCl4) serves as the main raw material for production.

The main cash cost comes from procuring hafnium chloride, citric acid, and high-purity inert gases. Electricity is also a major variable expense because the manufacturing process requires high-temperature treatment in induction furnaces.

Production requires compliance with hazardous waste regulations and the use of gas scrubbing and neutralization systems to capture and treat hydrochloric acid (HCl) vapors generated during processing.
