Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 30 million to USD 80 million for a 30,000 to 80,000 MT/year facility.
The benchmark plant capacity is 50,000 to 70,000 MT/year of Heavy Alkyl Benzene as a co-product of a 100,000 to 150,000 MT/year LAB plant.
The global Heavy Alkyl Benzene market is anticipated to be around USD 5.5 billion to USD 6.5 billion and is forecast to reach USD 7.5 billion to USD 9 billion by the early 2030s, growing at a CAGR of 4.0% to 5.0%.
Detergent and surfactant intermediates represent 30% to 35% of demand; industrial lubricants and base oils account for 25% to 30%; transformer and electrical insulation oils account for 15% to 20%; and chemical intermediates, heat transfer fluids, and other specialty applications constitute 15% to 20%.
The process uses Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene with long-chain olefins derived from n-paraffin dehydrogenation, followed by fractionation to separate LAB and HAB cuts. The n-paraffins are dehydrogenated over a platinum catalyst at 400 to 500 degree Celsius, while alkylation occurs at 30 to 60 degree Celsius under HF catalysis or at higher temperatures over a solid acid bed.
Key feedstocks include benzene with greater than 99.5% purity, n-paraffins extracted from kerosene in the C10-C14 range, hydrogen for dehydrogenation, and HF or a solid acid alkylation catalyst. Benzene and n-paraffin fractions together represent 75% to 85% of total raw material cost.
The alkylation reactor system, fractionation columns, and dehydrogenation unit represent the largest CAPEX component, accounting for 40% to 50% of the total Heavy Alkyl Benzene plant setup cost.
Manufacturing costs are primarily driven by the prices of benzene and n-paraffin feedstock, which together account for approximately 60% to 70% of variable operating expenses.
Major producing regions include India, China, the Middle East, Spain, and South Africa. Asia-Pacific accounts for approximately 62% of global Heavy Alkyl Benzene production capacity, with China and India being major producers.
Available grades include electrical-grade material that must comply with IEC 60296 standards, along with sulfonation-grade and lubricant-grade Heavy Alkyl Benzene products.
Manufacturing requires permits for handling HF acid or solid acid catalysts, environmental approvals, and HF mitigation and scrubbing units.
