Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated capital cost ranges from USD 40 million to USD 200 million for a 30 to 200 TPD SMR hydrogen unit, and USD 800 to USD 1,400 per kW for a green hydrogen electrolyzer plant, with both figures covering the reforming section, PSA train, and necessary utilities.
For a steam methane reforming (SMR) unit, the benchmark plant capacity ranges from 30 to 200 tonnes per day (TPD) of hydrogen, consuming about 2.7 to 3.2 Nm³ of natural gas per Nm³ of H₂, while a green hydrogen unit typically has a capacity of 5 to 50 TPD.
The global Hydrogen market is projected to reach USD 155 billion to USD 190 billion by 2030 and is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2% to 8.0% over the same period.
The main end-use segments for Hydrogen include petroleum refining and hydroprocessing, accounting for approximately 33% of demand; ammonia production, representing approximately 27%; methanol synthesis, accounting for approximately 11%; steel production via direct reduced iron, representing approximately 7%; and fuel cell mobility and transportation, accounting for approximately 3%–5%.
The dominant commercial route for Hydrogen production is steam methane reforming (SMR), where natural gas reacts with high-pressure steam at 700–1,000 degree Celsius over a nickel catalyst to produce syngas, followed by a water-gas shift reaction and purification via pressure swing adsorption. Other production technologies include autothermal reforming (ATR), coal gasification, water electrolysis (alkaline, PEM, solid oxide), and methane pyrolysis.
For the SMR route, the primary feedstock is natural gas (methane, CH4), which accounts for 60%–75% of production cost. For the electrolysis route, the primary feedstock is demineralized water (H2O), with electricity accounting for 50%–80% of green Hydrogen production cost.
For SMR, core process equipment including the reformer furnace, shift reactors, and PSA unit represents 35%–45% of total plant cost. For electrolysis, core process equipment consisting of electrolyzer stacks and power conditioning represents 40%–55% of total plant cost.
Hydrogen production cost is primarily driven by feedstock and energy inputs. For SMR, natural gas is the main driver, accounting for 60%–75% of total OPEX, while for electrolysis, electricity is the main driver, accounting for 50%–80% of OPEX.
China, accounting for approximately 31% of global production; the United States, approximately 13%; Europe, approximately 10%–12%; the Middle East, approximately 8%–10%; and India, approximately 5%–7%, are the major Hydrogen-producing regions.
Available Hydrogen grades include industrial-grade gaseous Hydrogen with 99.9%–99.99% purity and fuel-cell-grade Hydrogen with 99.97%+ purity (ISO 14687). Liquid Hydrogen is also available, which is cryogenically cooled to -253 degree Celsius.
