Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 18 million to USD 70 million for a plant with 15,000 to 60,000 MT per year capacity, depending on starch source, propylene oxide storage, reactor pressure, washing intensity, water recycling, dryer type, dust control, grade mix, and residue testing.
Commercial modified starch lines typically range from 15,000 to 60,000 MT per year. A benchmark 30,000 MT unit can consume about 28,500 to 30,500 MT of dry native starch, 2,100 to 3,600 MT of propylene oxide, and 600 to 1,200 MT of sodium hydroxide on a 100% basis.
The global hydroxypropyl starch market is valued at approximately USD 0.9 billion to USD 1.4 billion at the final-material level and is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 5.5% to 6.0% through 2033.
Food and beverage processing accounts for about 55% to 65% of demand; pharmaceutical and personal care applications account for around 10% to 15%; dry-mix mortar, gypsum, tile adhesives, and wall putty make up about 10% to 15%; and paper, textile, adhesive, coating, biodegradable materials, and other specialty applications account for the remaining 10% to 15%.
The main route uses alkaline aqueous slurry etherification of granular starch with propylene oxide under nitrogen at about 35°C to 50°C for 8 to 20 hours under 2 to 5 bar pressure, with the slurry maintained at pH 10.5 to 12.0. This is followed by neutralization to pH 5.0 to 7.0, repeated washing, filtration or centrifugation, low-temperature flash drying below the gelatinization limit, milling, screening, blending, testing, and packing.
The key feedstocks are native corn, tapioca, potato, or wheat starch, and propylene oxide. Together, these two inputs account for approximately 65% to 78% of total raw material spending. On a variable OPEX basis, native starch represents about 50% to 65% and propylene oxide around 12% to 22%. Sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfate or sodium chloride, process water, and neutralizing acids are additional inputs.
Etherification reactors, slurry tanks, filters, centrifuges, dryers, mills, and propylene oxide handling systems represent about 35% to 45% of the total hydroxypropyl starch plant setup cost.
The cost of purchased native starch is the dominant driver, representing approximately 50% to 65% of variable operating expenses due to its consumption volume (about 0.94 to 1.02 MT of dry starch per MT of finished product). Propylene oxide is the second most important input at about 12% to 22% of variable costs, with energy for heating, mixing, drying, and milling adding roughly 8% to 13% of OPEX.
China is the largest production and consumption base, with corn starch clusters in Shandong, Jilin, Hebei, and Heilongjiang and tapioca processing in southern provinces. The United States, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Thailand are also important production regions. Asia Pacific as a whole accounts for approximately 45% to 55% of global consumption.
The product is available as food-grade, pregelatinized, pharmaceutical, and specialty technical grades. Under FAO JECFA specifications (INS 1440), hydroxypropyl groups are limited to 7.0% and propylene chlorohydrin to 1 mg/kg. Bulk food-grade material is generally assessed at USD 1,000 to USD 1,800 per metric ton, while pregelatinized, pharmaceutical, and specialty technical grades can reach USD 1,800 to USD 3,500 per metric ton.
The product must comply with FAO JECFA specifications (INS 1440), and plants must meet food and chemical obligations through compliance audits, wastewater treatment, salt recovery, propylene oxide vent control, starch dust management, and residue testing.
