Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX is around USD 20 million to USD 55 million for a refining plant producing 30–150 MT per year of indium.
A benchmark facility can produce around 30–150 MT per year of refined indium at 99.99% or higher purity.
The global refined indium market is valued at around USD 400–800 million, with projected annual growth of 4.8–5.5% through the 2030s.
Flat-panel displays and touchscreens account for around 55% of demand, solder and low-melting alloys for 15%, compound semiconductors for 12%, thin-film photovoltaics for 8%, and thermal interface materials, dental amalgams, and specialty alloys for 10%.
Indium is mainly recovered from zinc-processing residues through acid leaching, solvent extraction, cementation using aluminium or zinc, and electrolytic refining. The crude metal is further refined through repeated electrolysis to produce 4N or 99.99% indium.
The main feedstock is indium-bearing residue from zinc smelting and refining, typically recovered from zinc-sulfide concentrates. The residue must contain sufficient indium for economic recovery, while its cost share varies with residue availability and indium content. Such feedstock typically represents around 60–75% of total production costs.
Core equipment such as leaching tanks, solvent extraction units, cementation reactors, furnaces, electrolytic cells, and refining units accounts for around 50–60% of total machinery costs.
The main cost drivers are indium-bearing residues, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and extraction chemicals. The residue feedstock represents the highest raw-material cost.
Asia Pacific accounts for around 70% of refined indium output, making it the dominant producing region. China alone contributes more than 50% of global refined indium output.
Standard 4N indium with at least 99.99% purity represents around 50% of volume, 5N grade at least 99.999% accounts for 25%, 6N and 7N grades at least 99.9999% account for 15%, and custom forms and indium compounds make up around 10%.
Plants require permits for hazardous chemical handling, wastewater treatment, and worker safety. Sustainability measures include acid-mist scrubbers, treatment of heavy-metal residues, and proper management of process wastewater.
