Frequently Asked Questions

The initial investment for developing an iron ore mine can reach several billion dollars, with large greenfield projects often requiring USD 3 billion or more. For example, the Carajás mine was initially developed at a cost of about USD 3.5 billion.
Steel manufacturing accounts for more than 98% of iron ore demand. Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production and other applications such as pigments, specialized cement, and high-density aggregates account for the remaining less than 2%.
Iron ore is extracted mainly through open-pit mining, followed by crushing and grinding. Magnetic separation or other beneficiation methods remove impurities and increase iron concentration. The processed material is then supplied as fines, concentrate, or pellets through pelletization.
Iron ore quality mainly depends on Fe content and the levels of silica, alumina, phosphorus, and other impurities. Commercial products commonly range from around 58% to 65% Fe, with 62% Fe serving as a major benchmark and 65% Fe representing higher-grade material.
Mining and material handling are major cost areas, with fuel, electricity, maintenance, materials, personnel, and explosives contributing to operating costs. As an indicative benchmark from an operating magnetite producer, electricity accounted for about 40% of cash production costs, fuel 10%, maintenance and repairs 15%, and explosives 2% in 2025.
Australia accounts for about 37.2% of global iron ore mine production, followed by Brazil at 17.6%, China at 10.8%, and India at 10.8%. The top four countries together represented about 76.4% of global production.
Common commercial grades include around 58% Fe, 62% Fe, 62.5% Fe lump, and 65% Fe concentrate or pellets. High-grade iron ore is generally considered to contain about 65% Fe or more, while material around 62% Fe is widely used as a benchmark.
