Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for Isoamyl Laurate are cosmetics and personal care, including skincare, haircare, suncare, and colour cosmetics, as well as food and flavour applications. Skincare is the leading identified application and accounts for 8.3% of global Isoamyl Laurate demand. The remaining demand is distributed across other personal-care applications and food/flavour uses.
Isoamyl Laurate is manufactured through Fischer-type esterification, in which isoamyl alcohol (3-methyl-1-butanol) reacts with lauric acid (dodecanoic acid) in the presence of an acid catalyst to form Isoamyl Laurate and water. Industrial production can use controlled heating followed by removal of water and purification by vacuum distillation; alternative enzymatic esterification routes using immobilised lipase catalysts are also established.
The key feedstocks are isoamyl alcohol and lauric acid, used in approximately equimolar quantities. Based on their stoichiometric consumption and current 2026 bulk-listed prices, isoamyl alcohol represents approximately 35–40% and lauric acid about 60–65% of the direct feedstock cost.
Raw-material procurement is the principal cost driver, particularly lauric acid and isoamyl alcohol, which together constitute the direct feedstock requirement and approximately 100% of direct raw-material cost. Their prices, feedstock availability, reaction yield, catalyst consumption, energy required for esterification and vacuum distillation, and downstream purification efficiency are the major factors affecting overall manufacturing cost.
