Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for Isobutane are Fuel Blending, Refrigerants, Aerosol Propellants, and Chemical Intermediates. Fuel Blending accounts for more than 55% of global demand, while Refrigerants account for about 35.76% of the 2026 market; Aerosol Propellants and Chemical Intermediates together account for the remaining demand.
Isobutane is manufactured mainly through catalytic isomerisation of n-butane. The process uses a dual-functional catalyst containing metal and acidic sites to convert n-butane through intermediate olefins and subsequently hydrogenate the product to Isobutane. Separation and purification are then carried out by distillation, with small quantities of hydrogen used during the hydrogenation stage.
The production of Isobutane primarily requires n-butane as the main feedstock, along with a specialized isomerization catalyst and small amounts of hydrogen to facilitate the conversion process. n-Butane accounts for 100% of the direct hydrocarbon feedstock cost, as it is the sole carbon-based raw material used in the isomerization route, while the catalyst and hydrogen function as process inputs rather than primary feedstocks.
Feedstock procurement is the major cost driver, particularly the price and availability of n-butane, which are closely linked to crude oil, natural gas liquids, refinery operations, and broader energy-market conditions. Other important costs include catalyst consumption, hydrogen, energy for reaction and distillation, refrigeration, maintenance, and product purification. The overall production-cost assessment specifically identifies butane as the essential raw material for the isomerisation process.
Isobutane manufacturing requires stringent controls for flammable hydrocarbon handling, including closed-process equipment, leak detection, ventilation, pressure-control systems, fire and explosion protection, and safe storage and transportation. Plants must also control hydrocarbon/VOC emissions and treat process wastewater through appropriate wastewater-treatment systems, while the increasing use of Isobutane as the low-GWP R-600a refrigerant supports its role in lower-impact refrigeration applications.
