Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for Isopropyl Butyrate are food and beverage flavoring, fragrances and perfumes, personal care and cosmetics, industrial solvents, and medical and pharmaceutical applications. Food and beverage flavoring accounts for approximately 40–45% of demand, fragrances and perfumes for 20–25%, personal care and cosmetics for 15–20%, industrial solvents for 10–15%, and medical and pharmaceutical applications for about 5%. Isopropyl Butyrate is used as a flavoring agent, fragrance component, solvent for cellulose ethers, and in specialized medical research applications.
Isopropyl Butyrate is manufactured by reacting butyric acid with propylene in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out at about 125 degree Celsius under pressure, followed by fractional distillation to separate and purify the Isopropyl Butyrate and recycle unreacted components.
The key feedstocks are butyric acid and propylene. The stoichiometric requirement is approximately 0.677 tonne of butyric acid and 0.323 tonne of propylene per tonne of Isopropyl Butyrate. Based on current feedstock pricing, butyric acid represents approximately 65–75% of the direct raw material cost, while propylene accounts for about 25–35%.
The cost of butyric acid is the largest manufacturing cost driver because it represents the larger share of direct feedstock expenditure. Propylene prices are the second major cost factor, with their movement linked to crude oil, naphtha, petrochemical supply, and regional availability. Other cost factors include sulfuric acid consumption, reaction yield, energy requirements for heating and fractional distillation, labour, maintenance, waste treatment, storage, and transportation. Currently, fluctuations in both butyric acid and propylene prices have remained important influences on production economics.
