Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX range is USD 80 million to USD 250 million for a 50,000 to 200,000 TPA L-lysine manufacturing unit, covering the fermentation train, cell removal, ion exchange, crystallization, spray drying, utilities, and related infrastructure.
The benchmark plant capacity is 50,000 to 200,000 TPA of L-lysine, with products typically manufactured at 98.5% feed grade or higher. A facility at this scale consumes about 2.0 to 2.4 MT of glucose and 0.15 to 0.20 MT of corn steep liquor per MT of finished lysine.
The global L-lysine market is valued at around USD 9.8 billion, growing at a CAGR of about 6.9%.
Animal feed for swine and poultry accounts for 75% to 85% of demand, aquaculture and specialty feed represent 8% to 12%, human food and dietary supplements account for 4% to 7%, pharmaceutical and cosmetics applications represent 2% to 4%, and other applications account for the remaining 1% to 3%.
L-lysine is manufactured mainly through aerobic fed-batch fermentation using genetically optimized strains of Corynebacterium glutamicum. Glucose from corn or cane, corn steep liquor, ammonium sulfate, soybean meal, biotin, and other nutrients are used in the fermentation medium. The process operates at around 30 to 33°C and pH 6.8 to 7.2, followed by cell removal, ion exchange purification, concentration, crystallization, and drying to produce lysine hydrochloride or other commercial forms.
Glucose from corn or cane is the primary carbon feedstock, while corn steep liquor, soybean meal, and ammonium sulfate supply nitrogen and nutrients. Glucose and nitrogen-source feedstocks together represent around 55% to 70% of total raw material expense. Other inputs include biotin, phosphate salts, ion exchange resin, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, and packaging materials.
Core process equipment represents around 45% to 55% of the total L-lysine plant setup cost. Major equipment includes seed laboratories, production fermenters, air-handling and sterilization systems, cell separation equipment, ion exchange columns, evaporators, crystallizers, spray dryers, and packaging systems.
Glucose and nitrogen sources are the main cost drivers and account for approximately 55% to 65% of variable operating expenses. Other major factors include fermentation yield and strain productivity, glucose availability and pricing, energy for fermentation cooling, aeration, evaporation and spray drying, purification efficiency, labour, maintenance, waste treatment, and plant utilization.
Manufacturing capacity is concentrated mainly in China, the United States, South Korea, Indonesia, and Brazil. China is the largest production base, with major facilities in regions such as Shandong and Jilin. Major producers include ADM, Ajinomoto, CJ CheilJedang, Meihua Holdings, Fufeng Group, Global Bio-Chem Technology, Evonik, and COFCO Biochemical.
Available grades include L-lysine hydrochloride with at least 98.5% purity, L-lysine sulfate with around 62% to 70% lysine content, food-grade L-lysine hydrochloride meeting FCC requirements, and pharmaceutical-grade L-lysine hydrochloride meeting USP and Ph. Eur. specifications. Commercial products are also supplied as lysine base and liquid lysine depending on customer requirements.
Feed-grade L-lysine facilities must comply with applicable feed safety and quality requirements, including relevant FDA CVM requirements in the United States and EFSA requirements for the European market. Food-grade products must meet applicable FCC and food safety standards, while pharmaceutical-grade production requires cGMP compliance and relevant USP or Ph. Eur. specifications. Pharmaceutical applications may also require validated analytical methods, quality documentation, regulatory filings such as a DMF or equivalent, and facility inspections depending on the target market.
