Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX is around USD 8–25 million for a plant with a capacity of 100–800 MT/year. This covers glass-lined precipitation reactors, filtration and washing systems, calcination furnaces, milling and classifier lines, and nitrogen-purged packaging for phosphor-grade products.
A typical plant can produce around 100–800 MT/year on a 99.9% technical-grade basis. A 400 MT/year plant may consume approximately 260–285 MT of lanthanum oxide equivalent and 210–240 MT of phosphoric acid annually.
The global lanthanum phosphate market is estimated at around USD 30–90 million and is projected to reach USD 50–140 million by the early 2030s, growing at a CAGR of around 5.2–5.8%.
Fluorescent lamp green phosphor (LAP) for tri-band lighting accounts for around 25–35% of demand; rare-earth ceramic and glass additives for optical, refractory, and radiation-shielding applications account for 20–25%; catalyst support for petroleum and specialty chemistry accounts for 15–20%; and fuel-cell research, coating pigments, and specialty ceramics account for 20–30%.
Lanthanum chloride or nitrate is reacted with phosphoric acid or ammonium phosphate at around 60–90 degree Celsius, followed by aging for 2–4 hours. The precipitate is filtered, washed with hot deionized water, dried at about 110 degree Celsius, and calcined at around 900–1,100 degree Celsius for 2–4 hours. Phosphor-grade LAP can be co-precipitated with controlled amounts of cerium and terbium and calcined under forming gas.
Lanthanum chloride or lanthanum nitrate solutions at around 30–40% concentration are the main feedstocks. Lanthanum chloride or nitrate can account for around 55–65% of variable operating expenses, while lanthanum oxide equivalent costs are around USD 12–35/kg.
Core process equipment, including glass-lined precipitation reactors, aging tanks, filtration units, dryers, rotary calcination kilns, mills, and classifiers, can account for around 40–50% of total plant CAPEX.
Lanthanum chloride or nitrate is the highest variable cost, accounting for around 55–65% of variable operating expenses. Other cost drivers include phosphoric acid, energy for drying and calcination, filtration and purification, milling, labor, packaging, and changes in rare-earth feedstock prices.
Asia-Pacific accounts for more than 75% of global consumption, with China as the leading production and processing hub. Japan is another important producer, while Europe and North America supply specialty grades through established rare-earth and advanced-materials producers.
Technical-grade lanthanum phosphate is commonly available at around 99.9% purity for ceramic and catalyst applications. Phosphor-grade LAP, containing controlled cerium and terbium levels, is used in lighting and optical applications, while ceramic and analytical-reagent grades serve specialty markets.
Plants require suitable permits for acid and chemical handling, effluent-treatment systems for chloride- or nitrate-containing wastewater, and dust and fume collection around calcination operations. Phosphor-grade production may also require nitrogen-purged packaging, controlled impurity levels, environmental monitoring, and appropriate handling of rare-earth process residues.
