Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments are construction, animal feed, oil & gas, dust control, and agriculture. Construction applications, mainly concrete admixtures, account for approximately 44.7% of demand, followed by animal feed binders at 20.1%, oil well drilling at 15.1%, pesticide dispersants and agricultural applications at 10.1%, and dust control at 10.0%. Lignosulfonates are also used as chemical intermediates and dispersants in various industrial formulations.
Lignosulfonate is produced as a co-product of the sulfite wood-pulping process. Softwood chips are treated with sodium hydroxide, water, and sulfurous acid in a digester at 130–160 degree Celsius. The resulting spent sulfite liquor is neutralized, filtered, concentrated through evaporation, and then dried to produce lignosulfonate in powder or liquid form.
The key feedstocks are softwood wood chips or lignin, sodium hydroxide or other alkaline bases, and sulfurous acid or sulfiting chemicals. Raw materials, particularly the lignin-rich spent sulfite liquor and pulping chemicals, generally account for approximately 40–50% of operating expenses.
The major manufacturing cost drivers are utilities and energy, particularly steam and electricity required for evaporation and spray drying. Other important factors include the cost of make-up chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and sulfur-based chemicals, feedstock availability from sulfite pulp mills, maintenance of equipment exposed to corrosive sulfiting liquors, and wastewater treatment.
Asia-Pacific is the leading regional market for lignosulfonates, supported by its large pulp and paper base, construction activity, and demand for bio-based additives. Current market estimates place Asia-Pacific at about 45% of global lignosulfonate market revenue, while Europe and North America are also major markets.
Lignosulfonate is available in calcium, sodium, magnesium, and ammonium forms, as well as liquid and powder grades designed for applications such as construction, animal feed, agriculture, dispersants, and oilfield additives. Commercial sodium lignosulfonate grades commonly specify at least 95% dry matter, with lignosulfonate content generally ranging from 55% to 70% or higher depending on the grade. Calcium lignosulfonate feed grades can contain at least 55% lignosulfonate and up to 95% dry matter.
Lignosulfonate manufacturing requires wastewater and effluent treatment systems to manage concentrated and acidic process streams, along with appropriate handling of sulfiting chemicals and process residues. Plants must comply with applicable environmental, wastewater, chemical-handling, worker-safety, and emissions requirements. Sustainability requirements are also becoming increasingly important because lignosulfonate is a bio-based co-product of sulfite pulping and is used as an alternative to some synthetic additives.
