Frequently Asked Questions

Pigments and coatings account for approximately 45% of demand, electronics and optical applications for about 25%, traditional medicine and ritual applications for around 15%, and mercury stabilization and related applications for the remaining 15%.

Mercury Sulfide (HgS) can be produced by combining elemental mercury with a sulfur source under controlled conditions to form HgS, followed by separation, washing, drying, and purification. Industrial systems use enclosed reactors and mercury-vapor containment and recovery systems; both black metacinnabar and red cinnabar forms can be produced depending on the process and subsequent phase treatment. The Minamata Convention specifically identifies cinnabar and mercury sulfide as mercury compounds subject to mercury supply, storage, and waste controls.

The principal feedstocks are elemental mercury and elemental sulfur, with sodium sulfide, sodium polysulfide, or another sulfide source and process water used in wet-process routes. Mercury and sulfur together generally account for approximately 85–95% of raw-material expenditure, with mercury being the dominant input because Hg represents about 86.2% of HgS by mass.

Elemental mercury is the largest cost driver, while sulfur and sulfide reagents, energy, purification, mercury recovery, containment, waste treatment, and regulatory compliance also affect costs. Mercury and sulfur feedstocks together can represent approximately 85–95% of raw-material expenditure, while containment and mercury-recovery requirements add significant operating and environmental-control costs.

China and other Asian production bases are important for mercury compounds, while Europe and North America have specialized production and mercury-waste stabilization facilities. A reliable current percentage split of dedicated global Mercury Sulfide manufacturing capacity is not publicly established, so no defensible regional capacity-share figure can be assigned.

Mercury Sulfide is available in black and red forms and in technical, laboratory, reagent, and high-purity grades. Commercial high-purity specifications include approximately 99%, 99.9%, 99.99%, and 99.999% HgS grades, while specialized materials can be supplied at even higher purity.

Mercury Sulfide is specifically listed as a mercury compound under the Minamata Convention. Requirements therefore include controlled mercury handling and storage, prevention of mercury emissions and releases, mercury recovery, and environmentally sound management of mercury-containing waste. India is a Party to the Minamata Convention, having ratified it in 2018, so applicable Indian hazardous-chemical, environmental, occupational-safety, and waste-management requirements also apply.
