Frequently Asked Questions

The dominant end-use segment is the construction industry, where mortars and concrete admixtures account for 44.4% of the market. Other applications include ceramics and refractories, geopolymers, paints and coatings, and soil stabilization or wastewater treatment.
The process begins with the pre-processing of the kaolinite source through crushing, grinding, and drying to ensure a consistent feed. This material is continuously fed into a specialized high-temperature furnace, such as a rotary kiln or a flash calciner, and heated to a controlled temperature range of 650-750 degree Celsius. After calcination, the hot metakaolin is rapidly cooled and ground to a very fine particle size to enhance its pozzolanic activity.
Primary feedstocks include a kaolinite source, such as high-quality kaolin clay or paper mill sludge, along with fuel such as natural gas, coal, or alternative fuels. Kaolin or other aluminosilicate feedstocks typically account for around 40% to 55% of raw material costs, while fuel and energy can represent around 15% to 25% of total production costs. The exact shares vary depending on feedstock quality, fuel type, energy efficiency, and plant configuration.
Fuel costs are the largest variable cost component due to the high temperatures required for the calcination process. Other significant drivers include raw material costs for kaolinite sources and electricity costs for grinding mills, air classifiers, conveyors, and fans.
Asia-Pacific is the leading region for metakaolin manufacturing, accounting for around 50% to 60% of global production. China is the largest producer in the region, followed by India, while Japan, South Korea, and Australia also have established production and processing capacity. North America and Europe account for most of the remaining output, with smaller production bases in other regions.
Metakaolin is characterized by an average particle size of approximately 1-10 microns and a chemical composition mainly composed of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) in a molar ratio close to 1:2.
Manufacturing requires dust collection and emission control systems, such as high-efficiency bag filters, electrostatic precipitators, or cyclones, to ensure environmental compliance and safety. Additionally, the choice of fuel for calcination significantly affects the carbon footprint of the production process.
