Frequently Asked Questions

Formaldehyde production accounts for approximately 25% of global Methanol demand, MTO/MTP represents less than 20%, and energy-related applications such as fuel blending, MTBE, DME, and biodiesel account for more than 30%. Acetic acid contributes about 10%, while MMA, solvents, and other chemical derivatives make up the remaining demand.
Methanol is commercially produced by synthesizing syngas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide and passing it over a copper-based catalyst at approximately 200–300 degree Celsius and elevated pressure, followed by cooling, condensation, gas-liquid separation, and distillation. Syngas is primarily generated from natural gas through steam reforming or autothermal reforming, while coal and naphtha can also be used as feedstocks.
The key feedstocks are natural gas, coal, or naphtha, which are converted into syngas before Methanol synthesis. For natural-gas-based plants, the feedstock or fuel component can account for approximately 60% or more of total production cost, while some techno-economic studies report natural gas contributing about 81–83% of operating costs depending on plant configuration and energy prices.
Feedstock prices are the largest cost driver, particularly natural gas for gas-based plants and coal for coal-based production. Feedstock and energy costs can account for approximately 60–80% of production economics, while syngas generation, compression, utilities, distillation, catalyst consumption, plant efficiency, and carbon-management requirements also affect the final cost.
Commercial Methanol is available in technical, chemical, fuel, and high-purity grades. Standard Grade AA or IMPCA Methanol requires a minimum purity of 99.85% by weight on a dry basis, while laboratory and electronic grades can reach 99.9% or higher.
Manufacturing requires controls for greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollutants from syngas generation, including CO₂, NOx, and, depending on the feedstock and process, SOx. Facilities also require wastewater treatment, management of process chemicals and waste, flammable-liquid controls, emissions monitoring, and compliance with applicable environmental, occupational-safety, and hazardous-material regulations. Methanol producers are increasingly implementing carbon capture and other measures to reduce production-related emissions.
