Frequently Asked Questions

Paints, varnishes, lacquers, and coatings account for approximately 29% of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone demand. Adhesives, rubber processing, and automotive applications together represent around 25% to 30%, while pharmaceuticals, chemical extraction, agrochemicals, and other specialty applications account for the remaining 40% to 45%.
Methyl Isobutyl Ketone is conventionally produced through the aldol condensation of acetone with barium hydroxide to form diacetone alcohol. The intermediate is dehydrated at approximately 100–120 degree Celsius to form mesityl oxide, which is subsequently hydrogenated using a suitable catalyst to produce Methyl Isobutyl Ketone. Modern processes can also combine condensation, dehydration, and hydrogenation into a one-step acetone-to-MIBK process.
The key feedstocks are acetone and barium hydroxide, with hydrogen required for the final hydrogenation step. Acetone is the principal raw material, while the combined raw material cost can account for approximately 75% to 80% of total production cost.
Acetone prices are the primary cost driver because acetone is the main feedstock. Other important factors include hydrogen consumption, catalyst costs, conversion and yield, energy consumption during dehydration and hydrogenation, distillation requirements, and raw material efficiency. Raw materials can account for approximately 76.7% of total product cost, making feedstock prices a major influence on MIBK manufacturing economics.
