Frequently Asked Questions

The major end-use segments for Naphtha include petrochemical feedstock, gasoline blending, solvents, hydrogen production, and specialty applications. Petrochemical feedstock applications, particularly steam cracking for producing ethylene, propylene, and other olefins, account for approximately 70–80% of global demand. Gasoline blending represents around 10–15% of demand, while solvent applications contribute about 5–10%. Hydrogen production and other specialty uses account for the remaining 4–6% of demand.
Naphtha is produced through the fractional distillation of crude oil in petroleum refineries. The crude oil is heated in a furnace and separated in an atmospheric distillation column based on differences in boiling points. The naphtha fraction is collected within the boiling range of approximately 30–200°C and may undergo additional treatment processes such as hydrotreating, reforming, or blending to meet specific product requirements.
The primary feedstock required for Naphtha production is crude oil. Crude oil typically represents approximately 70–85% of total production costs, making it the largest cost component. Additional costs include refinery utilities, catalysts, hydrogen consumption, labor, maintenance, and environmental compliance systems.
The Atmospheric Distillation Unit (ADU/CDU) generally accounts for around 20–30% of total refinery capital expenditure, while naphtha-specific processing units such as hydrotreating, reforming, and separation systems contribute approximately 5–10% of total refinery CAPEX. The remaining investment is allocated to utilities, storage, hydrogen systems, environmental controls, and supporting infrastructure.
The largest cost driver for Naphtha production is crude oil pricing, which significantly influences overall production economics. Crude oil costs typically account for the majority of operating expenses. Other factors affecting manufacturing costs include refinery energy consumption, catalyst costs, hydrogen requirements for treatment processes, maintenance expenses, logistics, and environmental compliance costs.
The major Naphtha-producing regions include Asia-Pacific, particularly China, India, South Korea, and Japan, along with the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Asia-Pacific and the Middle East together account for more than 50% of global refining capacity and represent the largest production and export hubs for Naphtha. Specific regional capacity shares vary depending on refinery output and market conditions.
Naphtha is available in different grades based on boiling range, composition, and intended application. Light Naphtha typically has a boiling range of approximately 30–90 degree Celsius and is mainly used as a petrochemical feedstock. Heavy Naphtha generally has a boiling range of around 90–200 degree Celsius and is used in catalytic reforming for gasoline blending and aromatics production. Naphtha specifications may also vary by sulfur content, paraffin content, aromatics level, and octane characteristics.
Naphtha manufacturing requires compliance with refinery environmental, safety, and emissions regulations. Key requirements include air emission controls for sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management, and hydrocarbon leak detection systems. Refineries also implement fire protection systems, process safety management practices, and energy-efficiency measures to reduce emissions and improve sustainability performance.
