Frequently Asked Questions

A fully integrated kraft-based paper board mill generally requires an investment of around USD 80 million to USD 250 million.
Paper board mills commonly operate at capacities of about 100,000 to 300,000 MT per year. A medium-sized facility generally has an annual production capacity close to 200,000 MT.
The global paper board market is estimated at around USD 150 billion to USD 180 billion and is projected to reach nearly USD 200 billion to USD 250 billion by the early 2030s, with a CAGR of about 4.0% to 5.5%.
Food and beverage packaging represents around 35% to 45% of total demand. Consumer goods and folding cartons account for about 20% to 30%, pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging contributes 10% to 15%, and construction and industrial uses represent another 10% to 15%.
Paper board is commonly produced through the kraft pulping process. Wood chips are cooked with white liquor at about 170 to 176 degree Celsius and 7.5 to 10.3 bar for 5.5 to 6 hours. The pulp then undergoes oxygen delignification, ECF bleaching, Fourdrinier forming, pressing, multi-cylinder drying, and final coating or calendering.
The main raw materials are softwood and hardwood chips, including pine, spruce, eucalyptus, and birch. Wood chips and pulping chemicals together contribute around 50% to 65% of total raw material spending, while wood chips alone account for approximately 35% to 50% of variable operating costs.
Major equipment, mainly the paper machine and recovery boiler system, typically represents around 40% to 50% of the total investment needed to establish a paper board manufacturing plant.
Wood chips and pulping chemicals are the largest cost components and together account for about 50% to 65% of raw material expenses. Wood chips alone represent around 35% to 50% of variable operating costs. Energy used for digestion, drying, and steam generation contributes approximately 15% to 25% of total operating expenses.
China, the United States, Nordic countries, Brazil, and Indonesia are among the major paper board producers. Using wider paper and paperboard production as a benchmark, China held about 33% of global output, followed by the United States at 15%, India at 5%, Japan at 5%, Germany at 5%, Indonesia at 3%, and Brazil at 3%.
Common paper board grades include solid bleached sulfate (SBS), coated unbleached kraft (CUK), folding boxboard (FBB), and recycled chipboard, with each grade suited to different packaging and industrial applications.
