Frequently Asked Questions

Alkyd resins for paints and coatings represent approximately 45% to 55% of global pentaerythritol demand due to their use in decorative and industrial coatings. Lubricant esters and plasticizers contribute around 15% to 20%, PVC stabilizers account for approximately 10% to 15%, while fire retardants, explosives, adhesives, cosmetics, and specialty polymer applications collectively represent the remaining 15% to 25%.
Pentaerythritol is manufactured via a base-catalyzed poly-addition reaction process, in which formaldehyde reacts with acetaldehyde to form pentaerythritol and sodium formate. The unreacted formaldehyde is then evaporated and concentrated, and the solution is crystallized and dried to produce purified pentaerythritol as the final product.
Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are the primary feedstocks and together account for approximately 60% to 75% of total raw material costs. Formaldehyde generally represents the larger share due to higher consumption volume, while catalysts, utilities, and process chemicals contribute the remaining cost share.
Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde prices are the major cost drivers, as raw materials account for the largest share of production expenses. Other factors influencing manufacturing costs include energy consumption, crystallization and drying requirements, labor, maintenance, waste treatment, and process efficiency.
