Frequently Asked Questions

Isocyanates such as MDI and TDI for polyurethane production account for an estimated 70-80% of phosgene demand, followed by polycarbonate production at 8-12%, pesticides and agrochemical intermediates at 5-8%, and pharmaceuticals, dyes, acid chlorides, and other specialty chemicals at 7-10%.
Phosgene is produced via an exothermic reaction of carbon monoxide with chlorine at approximately 400 degree Celsius, using activated carbon or charcoal as the catalyst. The core manufacturing equipment includes multitubular reactors, activated carbon catalyst beds, heat exchangers, condensation and cooling systems, adsorber beds, distillation columns, and safety containment systems.
The principal feedstocks are chlorine and carbon monoxide. Chlorine is estimated to account for around 60-75% of direct raw material costs, while carbon monoxide represents approximately 25-40%.
The cost and procurement of phosgene is primarily driven by fluctuations in the prices and availability of its raw materials, mainly carbon monoxide and chlorine. The industrial phosgene supply chain is further influenced by demand shifts in downstream industries, technological advancements in catalysts and reactor designs, and regulatory changes affecting chlorine usage and environmental compliance costs.
Phosgene manufacturing is subject to stringent occupational, environmental, and process-safety requirements because the chemical is extremely toxic by inhalation and can cause severe respiratory injury. Facilities require closed systems, continuous leak monitoring, ventilation and emission controls, emergency response measures, safe storage and handling, and appropriate hazardous-waste management. In the United States, applicable facilities may also fall under EPA's Risk Management Program requirements for highly hazardous substances, while OSHA process-safety requirements address prevention of catastrophic releases. Sustainability measures include minimizing fugitive emissions, improving chlorine utilization, recovering process materials where feasible, and reducing energy and waste generation.
