Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments include automotive, electrical and electronics, consumer goods, industrial parts, textiles, and construction. At the broader global application level, automotive accounts for around 38.5% of PBT consumption, electrical and electronics 33.4%, consumer and industrial applications 11.1%, extrusion applications 7.1%, and other uses 9.9%.
PBT is manufactured through polycondensation. The process begins with an esterification reaction in which 1,4-butanediol reacts with dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) or terephthalic acid (TPA) to form bis(4-hydroxybutyl) terephthalate as an intermediate. This intermediate then undergoes polycondensation at around 230 to 250 degree Celsius under vacuum to produce polybutylene terephthalate.
The main feedstocks are 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and terephthalic acid (TPA), both derived primarily from petrochemical value chains. As an external industry benchmark, BDO and TPA together account for approximately 55% to 65% of standard PBT resin production cost.
The main manufacturing cost drivers are BDO and TPA prices, which are influenced by crude oil prices, upstream petrochemical markets, and supply disruptions. Other cost factors include labor, electricity, water, equipment maintenance, safety checks, and environmental compliance.
