Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX range for polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) is USD 30 million to USD 120 million for a plant with about 10,000 to 60,000 metric tons per year capacity, depending on technology, reactor count, THF recovery and hydrolysis sections, fractionation, and effluent and solvent handling.
The benchmark plant capacity is about 10,000 to 60,000 metric tons per year of PTMEG.
The global PTMEG market is expected to be around USD 3 billion to USD 5 billion and to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% to 6.0% over the coming years.
Spandex and elastane fiber represent 65% to 75% of demand, while thermoplastic polyurethane and cast elastomers represent 15% to 25%. Copolyester elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and other technical uses make up the balance.
PTMEG is manufactured by cationic ring-opening polymerization of tetrahydrofuran over an acid catalyst, with chain length controlled to the target molecular-weight grade. In the diacetate route, acetic anhydride caps the chain ends and the intermediate ester is hydrolyzed with water; unreacted THF is then stripped and recovered, followed by washing, purification, fractionation, drying, and storage.
Key inputs include tetrahydrofuran (THF), an acid catalyst system, and, depending on the production route, acetic anhydride, water, process solvents, and stabilizers. THF and the catalyst system together are estimated to account for around 75-85% of total raw material costs, with THF being the main cost component.
Core process equipment, including reactors, recovery and stripping columns, hydrolysis vessels, purification and fractionation systems, dryers, and storage tanks, represents around 40% to 50% of total CAPEX.
Purchased tetrahydrofuran is the largest cost driver, representing approximately 70% to 80% of variable operating expenses. Energy for polymerization, stripping, and THF recovery is about 12% to 18% of OPEX, with catalyst, acetic anhydride, and solvents as additional inputs.
China, South Korea, and Taiwan are the largest producing regions, with Europe and the United States hosting established makers and Japan also producing PTMEG.
PTMEG is available in different molecular-weight grades, commonly including 650, 1000, 1400, 1800, 2000, and 3000. Grades around 1800 and 2000 molecular weight are widely used for spandex, while other grades are used in polyurethane elastomers, synthetic leather, adhesives, coatings, and related applications.
Manufacturing requires approved industrial zoning, environmental permits, effluent treatment, solvent handling, worker safety controls, and regular compliance audits. Sustainability efforts include solvent and THF recovery, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and increasing interest in bio-based PTMEG, with commercial bio-based PTMEG production now reported in China.
