Frequently Asked Questions

The CAPEX range is USD 150-350 million for a Portland cement manufacturing plant with 0.5-2.0 million MT/year capacity.
The benchmark scale for Portland cement is in the range of 0.5 to 2.0 million metric tons per year of Portland cement.
The global market is currently valued at approximately USD 215 billion to USD 226 billion and is projected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 4.5 to 4.9% by the 2030s.
Ready-mix concrete accounts for around 45-50% of demand, while precast concrete products represent 15-20%. Mortar manufacturing accounts for approximately 10-15%, road and highway construction for 10-12%, and other construction applications make up the remaining 5-15%.
The production technology is the dry-process rotary kiln route using a 4 to 6-stage cyclone preheater and in-line precalciner. The process involves heating limestone and corrective materials to 800-900 degree Celsius in a preheater and then to 1,400-1,500 degree Celsius in a rotary kiln to form clinker, which is then ground with 3-5% gypsum to produce finished cement.
Key feedstocks include limestone (75-80% of the raw mix), clay or shale, gypsum (3-5% by weight), and thermal fuels such as coal, petroleum coke, natural gas, biomass, or alternative fuels.
The main equipment, including crushers, raw mills, preheater cyclones, precalciner, rotary kiln, grate cooler, finish mill, conveyors, fans, and silos, accounts for 60 to 70% of total CAPEX.
Major cost management factors include limestone quarrying costs, thermal fuel procurement, and electricity consumption. Fuel is the biggest cost component, representing 30% to 40% of cement production cost.
China is the largest producer, followed by India, and Asia-Pacific accounts for around 46% of global Portland cement consumption.
Available grades include Type I OPC for general construction, Type III and Type V for early strength or sulfate resistance, and Portland limestone cement with 5-15% limestone filler.
Portland cement plants need to manage dust and other air emissions, kiln emissions, fuel handling, quarry impacts, wastewater, and industrial waste in line with local environmental requirements. Sustainability efforts increasingly focus on lower-carbon cement, alternative fuels, supplementary cementitious materials, energy efficiency, waste reuse, and carbon capture, as clinker production is the most energy- and carbon-intensive part of cement manufacturing.
