Frequently Asked Questions

Food processing and food-grade applications account for an estimated 30-35% of demand, followed by chemical and industrial applications at 20-25%, water treatment and water softening at 15-20%, oil and gas drilling at 10-15%, pharmaceuticals and personal care at 5-10%, and textiles, leather, ceramics, detergents, and other applications at 5-10%.
Two processes are described: By Brine Evaporation, a salt solution is prepared and insoluble components are removed via a brine clarifier, after which the brine is concentrated to 50-60% using a hydro-cyclone battery, and a centrifuge produces salt cakes with 4-5% moisture content. The salt is then dried and iodized in a fluid bed dryer to yield PVD Salt. By Underground Salt Extraction, wells are drilled to a depth of 1,000 feet with lateral drilling, water is pumped down to dissolve salt deposits, the resulting brine is extracted and processed through vacuum pumps where it is heated and dried under reduced pressure to form PVD Salt.
The main feedstock is rock salt or salt-containing brine, depending on the production route. Salt feedstock is estimated to account for around 80-90% of direct raw-material costs, while water, purification chemicals, and other processing inputs account for approximately 10-20%.
Since PVD salt production involves physical separation rather than a chemical reaction, the major equipment includes brine clarification, evaporation, crystallization, centrifugation, drying, and screening systems. These core process units are estimated to represent around 40-50% of total plant CAPEX, with the remainder covering salt/brine handling, storage, utilities, buildings and civil works, electrical and instrumentation systems, environmental controls, and other infrastructure.
The main cost drivers are salt or brine feedstock costs and energy consumption, particularly steam and electricity required for evaporation, crystallization, vacuum generation, and drying. Other important factors include brine purification chemicals, plant utilization, salt recovery, centrifugation and drying efficiency, labor, maintenance, water consumption, packaging, transportation, and environmental compliance.
Asia-Pacific is estimated to account for around 45-55% of global PVD salt manufacturing capacity, followed by North America at 15-20%, Europe at 15-20%, the Middle East at 5-10%, and Latin America and other regions at 5-10%.
PVD salt is generally supplied as high-purity sodium chloride, with commercial specifications commonly around 99.6% NaCl or higher on a dry basis. Typical specifications include low moisture, low calcium and magnesium content, low sulphate and water-insoluble matter, and controlled iron levels. Commercial PVD salt may have around 85% of particles between 200 and 600 microns, although particle-size specifications vary by supplier and application.
PVD salt manufacturing is subject to requirements covering water use and discharge, brine extraction, waste management, energy consumption, worker safety, food safety where applicable, and product quality. In India, industrial-grade common salt is covered by BIS specifications, including limits for NaCl, insoluble matter, calcium, magnesium, sulphates, iron, and moisture. Sustainability measures include recovering condensate and process water, improving evaporation and drying efficiency, reducing brine and chemical losses, and minimizing energy consumption.
