Frequently Asked Questions

Resorcinol can be manufactured through the Hock rearrangement of 1,3-diisopropylbenzene. The process first involves the dialkylation of benzene with propylene to form 1,3-diisopropylbenzene, followed by oxidation to the corresponding hydroperoxide and acid-catalyzed rearrangement to produce resorcinol and acetone as a co-product.
The main feedstocks are benzene and propylene, which are used to produce 1,3-diisopropylbenzene before the oxidation and rearrangement stages. Benzene accounts for around 55-65% and propylene for 30-40%, with the remaining 5-10% covering oxidants, catalysts, and other process inputs.
Benzene and propylene prices are the major cost drivers, as both are key petrochemical feedstocks and their prices are influenced by crude-oil and broader petrochemical market conditions. Other important factors include feedstock availability, separation and recycle requirements, energy consumption, oxidation and purification costs, equipment maintenance, labor, waste treatment, and regulatory compliance.
Resorcinol manufacturing requires controls for benzene exposure, chemical handling, emissions, wastewater, and process waste. Benzene is recognized as a known human carcinogen, requiring strict controls for handling and worker exposure. Resorcinol itself is subject to occupational exposure controls; NIOSH lists a REL of 10 ppm as an 8-hour TWA and 20 ppm as a short-term exposure limit. Sustainability measures include improving feedstock conversion, recovering and recycling unreacted hydrocarbons, optimizing energy use, and recovering useful acetone co-products to reduce waste and improve overall process efficiency.
