Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for rhodanine include pharmaceuticals and drug discovery, biochemical research and laboratory assays, dyes and pigments, agriculture, and chemical analysis. Pharmaceuticals and drug discovery are estimated to account for around 50-55% of demand, followed by biochemical and laboratory applications at 15-20%, dyes and pigments at 10-15%, agriculture and fungicides at 10-15%, and chemical analysis and other uses at 5-10%.
Rhodanine is synthesized by heating thioglycolic acid and thiourea together in the presence of a strong acid catalyst (95% concentrated sulfuric acid), using a solvent such as toluene, at a temperature of 80-100 degree Celsius for 15 to 20 hours, resulting in cyclization and formation of rhodanine as the final product.
The key feedstocks are thioglycolic acid (TGA) and thiourea, with sulfuric acid and process solvents serving as additional inputs. Thioglycolic acid accounts for around 60-70%, thiourea for 25-35%, and sulfuric acid, solvent, and other process inputs for about 5-10%.
Raw materials, particularly thioglycolic acid and thiourea, are likely to be the largest cost drivers, followed by energy consumption and downstream purification. Other important costs include sulfuric acid and solvent consumption, labor, equipment maintenance, waste treatment, quality control, packaging, storage, and transportation. Feedstock prices and availability can have a significant effect on production economics, while solvent recovery and process yield can help reduce the overall manufacturing cost.
