Frequently Asked Questions

Ricinoleic acid is made by breaking down (hydrolyzing) castor oil, which is about 85% to 90% ricinolein, the glyceride form of ricinoleic acid. At commercial scale this is usually done by splitting the oil with steam at high temperature and pressure. The alternative is saponifying it with caustic soda and then acidifying with sulfuric acid. Glycerol is separated out, and the fatty acid is washed, dried and distilled or fractionated to about 89% purity or higher. Enzyme-based splitting with lipases, and fungal biotransformation using Aspergillus flavus BU22S with calcium ions, are greener alternatives used for high-purity or specialty grades.
The key feedstock is castor oil, pressed from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). India produces about 92% of the world's castor oil, and Gujarat alone grows about 71% of India's crop. High-quality refined oil with low free fatty acid content and high ricinolein content is preferred for better yield. Raw materials, mainly castor oil, make up about 60% to 70% of total operating cost, and utilities another 7% to 11%.
Castor oil price is the biggest cost driver, making up about 60% to 70% of operating cost. Its price swings with monsoon rainfall, castor acreage and crop yields in Gujarat. Energy for steam splitting and distillation is the next largest cost, at about 7% to 11%. Labor, catalysts or chemicals, glycerol by-product credits and wastewater treatment also affect cost. Because supply is concentrated in India, export demand and currency movements add further price volatility.
