Frequently Asked Questions

Food and beverage applications account for about 40% to 45% of demand, pharmaceuticals for 15% to 20%, personal care and oral care products for 15% to 20%, and electroplating and other industrial applications for 20% to 25%. Food and beverage is the largest application segment.

The Remsen-Fahlberg process uses toluene to produce o-toluene sulfonamide, followed by oxidation and cyclization to form saccharin. Another route starts from phthalic anhydride, which is converted through phthalimide and anthranilic acid intermediates to saccharin.

o-Toluene sulfonamide and phthalic anhydride are the main starting materials, depending on the production route. Together with other reagents and processing chemicals, raw materials account for about 55% to 70% of total production costs.

Costs are mainly driven by feedstock prices, synthesis route, reagent consumption, energy use, waste treatment, purification, and plant utilization. Chromium-containing waste treatment can also increase costs in the Remsen-Fahlberg process.

Saccharin manufacturing is concentrated in Asia, particularly China and South Korea. China is a major production and export base for saccharin and its sodium salt.

Saccharin is available as saccharin and soluble salts such as sodium saccharin, calcium saccharin, and potassium saccharin. Sodium saccharin is widely used because of its high water solubility. Food-grade sodium saccharin generally requires an assay of 99% to 101% on a dried basis under the JECFA specification.
