Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for sodium cyanide include gold and silver mining, chemical manufacturing, electroplating and metal treatment, case hardening, and specialty chemical production. Mining is by far the largest application, accounting for around 80-86% of global demand, while chemical applications may represent 8-12%, electroplating and metal treatment 2-4%, and other uses such as case hardening, dyes, pigments, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals around 2-5%.
Sodium cyanide is primarily produced via the Andrussow process using hydrogen cyanide (from ammonia and methane) and sodium hydroxide. A 30% NaOH solution is mixed with anhydrous HCN in a reactor to form sodium cyanide, which can be used as a solution or further processed into solid form.
The primary feedstocks are hydrogen cyanide and sodium hydroxide. In integrated production, HCN is generally generated from ammonia and natural gas, while sodium hydroxide is produced through the chlor-alkali process. HCN-related inputs account for around 60-70% of raw material costs, while sodium hydroxide may contribute approximately 30-40%.
Major cost drivers include raw materials (hydrogen cyanide and sodium hydroxide), energy for heating, cooling, and running machinery, labor, maintenance, packaging, transportation, and environmental compliance costs.
Manufacturing is concentrated in China (Anhui Shuguang, Hebei Chengxin, Guangan Chengxin), Australia (Orica, Australian Gold Reagents), the United States (E.I. DuPont, Cyanco), South Korea (Taekwang Industrial, Tongsuh Petrochemical), and Russia. Asia-Pacific accounts for around 35-40%, North America 20-25%, Australia/Oceania 15-20%, Europe and Russia/CIS 10-15%, and other regions 5-10%.
Sodium cyanide manufacturing requires strict controls for cyanide and HCN emissions, wastewater, hazardous waste, worker exposure, storage and transportation. EPA regulations specifically address cyanide chemical manufacturing process units and include requirements covering process vents, storage, transfer systems and emission controls. Sustainability measures include closed handling systems, cyanide recovery and reuse, wastewater treatment, process-water recycling, emission reduction and minimizing cyanide-containing waste.
