Frequently Asked Questions

Sodium polyacrylate is mainly used in water treatment, petroleum and drilling, papermaking, textiles, cosmetics and personal care, agriculture, environmental protection, and healthcare. Water treatment accounts for an estimated 25-30% of demand, followed by petroleum and drilling at 20-25%, papermaking at 12-15%, textiles and cosmetics and personal care at 8-10% each, agriculture at 5-8%, environmental protection at 5-7%, and healthcare and other uses at 5-8%.
Sodium polyacrylate can be manufactured by two routes: (1) Polymerization, where sodium hydroxide reacts with acrylic acid to form sodium acrylate, which is then polymerized into sodium polyacrylate; and (2) Saponification, where acrylonitrile is grafted onto starch (derived from corn), followed by saponification using sodium hydroxide to form sodium polyacrylate.
The main feedstocks are acrylic acid and sodium hydroxide, while starch may be used in certain graft-polymerization routes. For the conventional acrylic acid and sodium hydroxide route, these primary feedstocks are estimated to account for around 65-80% of total raw material costs.
