Frequently Asked Questions

Cell culture media supplements account for approximately 45% to 55% of demand, while therapeutic drug development represents 15% to 20%. Regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy account for around 15% to 20%, and cosmetics and personal care represent approximately 5% to 10%. The remaining demand comes from research, diagnostics, and other biotechnology applications.
Transferrin is produced recombinantly (rTf) using a modified strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae through fermentation in a large bioreactor. After fermentation, yeast cells are separated, and the protein is recovered through multi-step liquid chromatography, concentration, and filtration. Culture media contain carbon sources such as glycerol or glucose, nitrogen sources such as yeast extract, peptones, or amino acid mixtures, along with vitamins and trace minerals.
High-purity culture media components, including carbon sources, nitrogen sources, vitamins, and trace minerals, are the main upstream inputs. Buffers, salts, filtration materials, and chromatography resins are also important downstream inputs. Together, these materials can account for approximately 45% to 65% of total raw material and process-consumable expenses, depending on fermentation yield and the extent of downstream purification.
Upstream and downstream processing equipment can account for approximately 45% to 60% of total process equipment investment. This includes stainless-steel bioreactors, cell-separation systems, liquid chromatography systems and columns, filtration units, ultrafiltration systems, clean utilities, and associated process-control equipment.
Manufacturing costs are mainly driven by high-purity culture media, fermentation yield, energy consumption, single-use processing materials, chromatography resins, and downstream purification. Skilled bioprocessing labor, quality-control testing, sterile processing, facility maintenance, and cGMP compliance also contribute significantly to production costs.
Transferrin is available as high-purity recombinant transferrin (rTf) for pharmaceutical and biomanufacturing applications. Grades include therapeutic-grade, biopharmaceutical-grade, and animal-origin-free (AOF) material. Specifications typically cover protein purity, identity, iron-binding capacity, microbial quality, endotoxin levels, residual host-cell proteins, and other applicable contaminants.
Manufacturing requires a cGMP-compliant bioprocessing facility with validated fermentation, purification, filtration, and quality-control processes. Regulatory requirements can include FDA and EMA expectations for biopharmaceutical manufacturing, along with controls for animal-origin-free components, protein identity and purity, iron-binding capacity, microbial contamination, endotoxins, and other process-related impurities. DMF or equivalent regulatory documentation may be required when transferrin is supplied as an API or critical raw material for regulated products.
