Frequently Asked Questions

Unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) are widely used in building and construction, pipes and tanks, transportation, marine, electrical and electronics, wind energy, and other industrial applications. The estimated demand share is 25-37% for building and construction, 15-18% for pipes and tanks, 10-12% for transportation, 10-12% for marine, 10-12% for electrical and electronics, 5-7% for wind energy, and 10-18% for other applications.
UPR is produced via polycondensation through a batch esterification reaction between an acid anhydride (such as maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, isophthalic anhydride, or dicyclopentadiene) and a glycol (such as monoethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or propylene glycol) at high temperatures.
UPR manufacturing depends mainly on styrene, acid anhydrides, and glycols, with DCPD added for certain resin grades. Styrene represents an estimated 40-55% of direct raw-material costs, acid anhydrides 25-35%, glycols 15-25%, and modifiers and other additives around 5-10%.
Manufacturing costs are primarily driven by petrochemical raw materials, labor, and energy consumption. The largest component of OPEX is the fluctuating price of glycols, acid anhydrides, and styrene monomer, while high energy consumption for heating large reactors is also a primary factor.
UPR manufacturing requires controls for VOC emissions, particularly styrene, workplace exposure, wastewater, and chemical waste. Plants may use emission-control systems such as scrubbers, condensers, or thermal oxidizers, depending on the process and applicable local requirements. Sustainability measures include reducing styrene emissions, improving energy efficiency, recovering solvents or monomers where feasible, reducing process waste, and developing low-styrene or lower-emission resin formulations.
