Frequently Asked Questions

Fertilizer applications account for an estimated 65-75% of total urea phosphate demand, mainly through fertigation, foliar application, and starter fertilizers. Metal surface treatment and electroplating contribute around 10-15%, while flame-retardant applications account for approximately 5-10%. The remaining 5-15% comes from other uses such as cleaning agents, fermentation nutrients, and specialty chemical applications.

The production route reacts urea with phosphoric acid under controlled heat in a reactor, then cools, separates and purifies the mixture, and crystallizes it to obtain pure urea phosphate.

The main feedstocks are urea and phosphoric acid. On a stoichiometric basis, phosphoric acid represents the larger material requirement, and it is estimated to account for around 60-70% of direct raw material costs, while urea contributes approximately 25-35%. The remaining 5-10% covers process chemicals, conditioning agents, and other minor inputs.

Raw materials are the largest cost driver, with urea and phosphoric acid together estimated to account for around 65-80% of variable production costs. Energy and utilities, particularly for heating, evaporation, cooling, crystallization, and drying, contribute around 10-15%. Labor, maintenance, packaging, waste treatment, quality control, and logistics account for the remaining costs.

Urea phosphate plants need to comply with applicable air-emission, wastewater, solid-waste, chemical-handling, worker-safety, and environmental regulations. Key controls include managing acidic process streams, dust and particulate emissions, process wastewater, and residues from phosphoric acid purification. Sustainability measures can include recycling mother liquor, recovering unreacted materials, reducing water and energy consumption, and improving crystallization and product recovery. Continuous crystallization and mother-liquor recycling can also reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.
