Frequently Asked Questions

Adhesives and sealants account for approximately 30% to 35% of vinyl acetate demand, followed by paints and coatings at around 18% to 22%. Packaging and films contribute about 12% to 15%, while textile applications account for approximately 10% to 14%. Other uses, including construction chemicals, solar encapsulants, automotive applications, and medical products, make up the remaining 15% to 25%.
Vinyl acetate is synthesized primarily from acetic acid and ethylene via a vapor-phase oxidation reaction in the presence of a metal catalyst, followed by condensation and purification. An alternative route involves reacting acetic anhydride with acetylene to form ethylidene diacetate, which is then processed through a cracking tower to produce vinyl acetate.
The main feedstocks are ethylene and acetic acid, with oxygen also required for the oxidation reaction. Ethylene is estimated to account for about 45% to 55% of direct raw material costs, while acetic acid contributes around 25% to 35%. Oxygen and other process inputs, including catalyst-related costs, account for the remaining 15% to 25%.
