During the third quarter of 2023, the prices of anethole demonstrated oscillations throughout the quarter. In the initial phase, the compound's supply outpaced the demand, resulting in an elevation in the inventory levels and a decline in anethole prices. The downstream fragrance and flavor industries, on the other hand, had a rough run in both the third and fourth quarters of 2023, exerting a negative influence on the anethole price trend.

Europe

Although the third quarter showed significant fluctuations in the anethole market, the spike in the year-end quarter stabilized the market's momentum. The boost in the market activities during the fourth quarter was based on the exponential rise in the rate of procurement from the downstream fragrance and flavor industries and the suppressed supply of the product in European countries. Further, with the rise in awareness and market availability of essential oils, the demand for anethole also increased regularly with it.

North America

In North America, after facing many challenges in the downstream industries, the prices of anethole were registered on the lower end. However, at the advent of the fourth quarter, the demand rates of anethole showcased a seasonal rise, majorly attributed to the onset of the holiday season. Not only the domestic demand, but the rate of export also inclined without any lag and thus helped in the northwards movement of anethole prices. Further, initially, during the fourth quarter, the rate of production of anethole was mild as compared to the demand, but soon, the industrial activities caught up with the rising interest of consumers in this sector.

Anethole Production Processes

  • Production of Anethole from Anisole; from Estragole Oil; and from Propionaldehyde

In the production process of Anethole, anisole is used as a starting material. In this process, anisole is first synthesised to 4-methoxypropiopheone, which is finally synthesised to produce Anethole as a result.
