Indian FMCG companies reported price increases for soaps and other products during the April-June quarter due to rising raw material costs and geopolitical disruptions. Analysts expect margin pressure to intensify in Q2 but note that recent crude oil price declines may ease future cost increases.
Citronella oil, a natural essential oil steam-distilled from Cymbopogon grass, is a staple input across fragrance, personal care, and household segments, valued for its citrus-like aroma and insect-repellent properties. It feeds into perfumes, soaps, deodorants, candles, sprays, and lotions; because it is harvested and distilled rather than synthesised, its pricing tracks planted area, weather, harvesting cadence, and labour and distillation fuel costs.
Through H1 2026, citronella oil prices held a broadly firm, range-bound trajectory, carrying forward the constrained supply backdrop from late 2025. In India, the dominant origin spanning Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, and West Bengal, cultivation stayed subdued as growers favoured alternative crops, keeping fresh grass availability tight for distillation units. Asian prices stayed elevated, with Indonesian material facing similarly stubborn fieldwork and distillation costs despite favourable growing conditions. European and North American buyers, reliant on imports, paid a premium reflecting freight and natural-ingredient positioning, firming alongside origin tightness. Demand from insect-repellent formulators, aromatherapy, and home-care manufacturers stayed steady to firm, limiting slack in the chain.
Feedstock dynamics dominated, as drawdown of earlier inventories met only cautious replenishment of fresh production. Labour availability and harvest timing governed how quickly distillers could respond, keeping the market balanced toward tightness, while the oil's natural, eco-friendly appeal left little room for prices to soften.
