Global production volume is estimated at approximately 8,000 to 12,000 metric tons per year, driven mainly by demand from insect repellents, fragrances, and personal care industries.

Citronella oil is primarily used in insect repellents and household products, which account for approximately 35% to 45% of global demand due to its natural mosquito-repellent properties. Fragrance, soap, and cosmetic applications contribute around 30% to 40%, while aroma chemical isolation for ingredients such as citronellal and citronellol represents about 15% to 25%. Citronella oil is produced through steam distillation of citronella grass (Cymbopogon species). The harvested grass is first wilted to reduce moisture content and then loaded into distillation units, where steam extracts the essential oil components. The vapour mixture is condensed, separated from water, dried, filtered, and further refined through redistillation or fractionation for high-quality fragrance and cosmetic applications.

Fresh citronella grass cost (45 to 60% of variable OPEX) is the main driver of manufacturing cost. Boiler fuel or biomass, handling, and steam use account for the next largest shares, with grass price and oil yield being the primary causes of cost movement.

Citronella oil production is concentrated mainly in Indonesia, China, India, and Sri Lanka, with Indonesia being one of the largest producers of Java-type citronella oil. Based on industry estimates, Asia-Pacific contributes approximately 80% to 90% of global citronella oil supply, supported by favorable climate conditions and established cultivation networks. Indonesia and China together account for a significant portion of commercial production, while India and Sri Lanka supply regional and specialty markets.

Citronella oil is available mainly as a natural essential oil. The two primary commercial grades are Java type citronella oil, which represents approximately 58% to 67% of the global market and contains around 34% to 45% citronellal, and Ceylon type citronella oil, which is a lower-volume premium grade used in fine fragrances and aromatherapy applications. Additional grades are classified based on purity, citronellal content, and intended application.

Manufacturing must comply with environmental regulations, including waste treatment, spent grass handling, and compliance audits to meet regulatory obligations, and quality certification and testing are maintained. Sustainable sourcing practices, traceability of botanical materials, and certifications for natural ingredients are increasingly important for cosmetic, fragrance, and personal care applications.
