Corn futures hit multiyear highs

Corn futures rose to their highest level in over three years, driven by tighter U.S. supply expectations following a USDA WASDE report that cut yield forecasts more than anticipated, along with continued disruptions to Ukrainian grain exports constraining global supply. Extreme July heat and excessive rainfall across the U.S. Corn Belt further pressured crop outlooks, while European drought reduced regional production and boosted import demand, reinforcing the upward price momentum.

Corn Futures Hit Multi-Year High

December corn futures rose to a 2.5-year high for the contract, posting strong weekly gains. A weaker U.S. dollar and large daily export sales provided additional upward momentum alongside the crop tour results.

Glutamic Acid Price Trend Q1 2024

Glutamic acid synthesis involves glucose based fermentation as the fundamental production process. Thereby, the prices are greatly dependent on the fluctuations in the feedstock glucose prices. During the first quarter of 2024, glutamic acid prices witnessed a slight downturn as the domestic demand declined relatively. Sufficient inventory stocks were primarily responsible for this behavior of prices of glutamic acid in the Asian regional markets. The international trade was faced with various challenges at different levels, and the domestic trade alone was not able to sufficiently support the price trajectory.

The demands were even more humble in the European markets compared to the Asian markets. The surge in the logistic and processing costs did provide some positive cost support, however, the easy availability and depreciation in the feedstock prices nullified their impact on the upstream costs. Given these fluctuations in the market drivers, the glutamic acid prices followed such a confined trajectory. Majorly because the prices were mostly tugged between these driving factors. Overall, an average market performance was witnessed.

The glutamic acid, or L-glutamic acid, is produced by the fermentation of glucose. Glucose is an excellent carbon source, which is used for the production of glutamic acid. The production begins with fermenting glucose in the presence of a bacteria, i.e., Coryneform that leads to the generation of L- glutamic acid or glutamic acid as the final product.
