Asia
The isopropyl alcohol (IPA) market in Asia exhibited a downward trend in the last quarter of 2024, primarily due to weak demand across key downstream industries. Prices stood at 954 USD/MT in October and declined to approximately 918 USD/MT by December. The pharmaceutical and personal care sectors, which typically drive IPA consumption, saw high inventory levels but limited purchasing activity, further suppressing demand.
The slowdown in industrial activity towards the end of the year was also influenced by seasonal factors. To protect domestic producers, India imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese IPA imports. While this measure provided some support for local market prices, overall regional pricing remained under pressure due to ample supply and sluggish demand recovery. Meanwhile, geopolitical instability in the Middle East led to fluctuations in feedstock availability, though its impact on IPA prices in Asia remained limited. Prices were around 1201 USD/MT in October, declining to approximately 1116 USD/MT in December.
Europe
Prices in the European IPA market remained consistently low throughout Q4, posing ongoing challenges for the sector. The market was affected by weak demand from the pharmaceutical and coatings industries, while an ample supply prevented any significant price movement. Key European markets, including Germany, faced economic instability, which led to reduced industrial production and weaker consumer spending, further pressuring the market. Although feedstock prices experienced slight increases toward the end of the quarter, IPA prices remained subdued due to continued oversupply and limited sales activity. Additionally, European inventories were being liquidated before the end of 2024, reinforcing the bearish price trend.
North America
In North America, IPA prices followed a downward trend throughout Q4. The market faced weak demand from key downstream industries, such as automotive and paints, as stagnant construction spending and slowing industrial activity further weighed on consumption. Despite stable feedstock propylene prices, there was no upward momentum, as market conditions were primarily driven by sluggish downstream purchasing. Supply chain challenges, including a shortage of transportation equipment, led to inventory accumulation, particularly in Gulf Coast warehouses. Export opportunities for U.S. producers were further restricted by regulatory changes, such as temporary import restrictions on IPA in Mexico.
Although these challenges persisted, the festive season prompted a slight increase in procurement activities by quarter-end, helping stabilize prices. However, the overall market sentiment remained bearish due to persistent oversupply and weak demand fundamentals.
