Sodium Polyacrylate Price Trend for the First Half of 2022


The prices of sodium polyacrylate registered an upward trend in the Asian market during the first quarter. The increased market quotations due to the inflated energy costs, complex logistics and port congestions caused the prices of sodium polyacrylate to incline to an average of 2310 USD/MT in China and 2560 USD/MT in India. However, with the resurgence of covid-19, the Chinese government imposed a series of lockdowns which prompted the industries to halt production. The limited inventories coupled with the downstream demand destruction caused the prices of sodium polyacrylate to dwindle.


The price trends for sodium polyacrylate kept on the higher side of the scale during the said period. The absence of Baltic cargoes inflated upstream costs and supply shortages caused the prices to inflate further. The robust demand for super absorbents from the downstream industries caused the prices to hike by 2-3%.

North America

The US domestic market closely followed its European counterpart. The manufacturers increased quotations to protect their profit margins amid the surging input costs. The prices of sodium polyacrylate averaged 2710 USD/MT during the said period.

The molecular weight of the sodium polyacrylate group of polymers ranges from 1,000 to 78,000 g/mol. The majority of sodium polyacrylates used in detergents typically have a molecular weight of 4,500 g/mol (HERA, 2014). Although these polymers are not easily biodegradable, they are partially amenable to the process in the end. It is unlikely that they will bioaccumulate. For plants, terrestrial invertebrates, and aquatic species, sodium polyacrylate poses a modest toxicity risk.
