Asia

In Asia, trichlorfon prices showed an upward trajectory during the first quarter of 2025. China, the major producer, experienced supply constraints as several manufacturing facilities underwent scheduled maintenance, similar to the situation observed in the yellow phosphorus sector. Raw material costs increased, particularly chlorine, which reached record highs in late 2024 and continued to impact production costs into Q1'25. This directly affected trichlorfon prices as manufacturers passed these expenses to buyers.

The agricultural season's early preparations in countries like India and Vietnam created steady demand, though buyers remained cautious with their purchasing volumes. Most procurement was done on a need-basis rather than for stockpiling, reflecting market uncertainty.

Europe

The European trichlorfon market faced significant pressure during Q1'25, largely driven by rising energy costs and logistical challenges. The region, heavily dependent on imports, struggled with higher freight expenses and extended delivery times, causing trichlorfon availability issues. Like other chemicals in the region, trichlorfon was affected by broad inflationary pressures and increased regulatory scrutiny regarding pesticide usage. These factors contributed to a moderate price increase across European markets. Distributors reported thinning margins as they attempted to balance rising import costs against price-sensitive end-user markets, particularly in Eastern European countries where agricultural budgets remained tight.

North America

North America experienced a relatively stable trichlorfon market in the first quarter of 2025, characterized by balanced supply and demand dynamics. Similar to trends seen with other phosphorus-based chemicals, trichlorfon faced upward cost pressures from raw materials and transportation expenses. However, these increases were modest compared to other regions.

Strong domestic agricultural planning and steady pest control sector demand supported consistent pricing throughout the quarter. Regional manufacturers operated at normal capacity levels despite facing higher input costs, particularly from chlorine, which had reached record prices in late 2024. The market showed resilience with minimal disruptions, allowing for predictable pricing throughout the distribution chain.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, Trichlorfon prices are expected to stabilize in the coming months as production capacities return to normal levels, though continued pressure from raw material costs, particularly chlorine, may prevent any significant price decreases in the near term.

About Trichlorfon

Trichlorfon is a phosphonic ester, i.e., a dimethyl phosphonate in which a 2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl group substitutes the hydrogen atom attached to the phosphorus atom. It is a potent insecticide and an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase.

It can cause cholinesterase( neurotransmitters) inhibition in humans, which can overstimulate the central nervous system causing dizziness, nausea, and respiratory paralysis in the worst scenarios. An important agrochemical is used on crops, livestock, lawns, golf courses, and ornamental plants to control the infestation by lepidopterans, lice, crickets, beetles, flies, etc.

Trichlorfon Production Processes

During this process, dimethyl phosphite is added dropwise into trichloroacetaldehyde, and the mixture undergoes a synthesis reaction under specific conditions to produce a semi-finished trichlorfon product. This semi-finished product is washed with water and subjected to further treatment like crystallization, centrifugation, and separation to obtain the final product.
