  • Asian methanol CFR China gained 64 percent to 0.54 dollars per kilogram between August 5 and October 8
  • Southeast Asia and South Korea CFR methanol climbed 44 and 40 percent over the same window
  • Methanex October 2026 Asian contract price was set at 0.70 dollars per kilogram
  • Chinese MTO units scaled back output on weak downstream margins
  • European October to December methanol contract priced at about 0.875 euros per kilogram

Asian methanol markets moved through the first two weeks of October 2026 with a sharp rally in regional spot prices, as reduced Iranian export flows, tight shipping availability through the Strait of Hormuz, and firm biodiesel demand continued to pressure the physical supply balance. Between August 5 and October 8, CFR China methanol spot prices climbed about 64 percent to 0.54 dollars per kilogram, with Taiwan CFR up 63 percent to 0.628 dollars per kilogram, Southeast Asia CFR up 44 percent to 0.65 dollars per kilogram, and South Korea CFR up 40 percent to 0.614 dollars per kilogram. India CFR gained a smaller 4 percent to 0.537 dollars per kilogram, as its August starting level was already higher than the other Asian destinations.

The supply picture remained the dominant price driver. Fewer vessels reached Chinese ports through September and early October, coastal tank stocks shrank, and Gulf shipping concerns left sellers with little prompt material to offer. Methanex posted its October 2026 Asian contract price at about 0.70 dollars per kilogram, roughly 150 dollars per tonne above the September level of 0.55 dollars per kilogram. The producer's October China contract was set at about 0.625 dollars per kilogram, with the Asian benchmark serving as a reference price for other producers and spot trades.

Regional contract prices in Europe and North America moved on their own trajectories. Europe's October to December methanol contract was priced at about 0.875 euros per kilogram, equivalent to about 0.96 United States dollars per kilogram, a touch below the third quarter level. North American reference prices for October stood at about 1.45 dollars per kilogram, reflecting continued firm regional natural gas prices and local demand from methanol to formaldehyde, acetic acid, and MTBE converters.

Downstream constraints capped the Asian rally. Weak methanol to olefins margins have led many Chinese MTO units to enter maintenance or scale back output through the fourth quarter. Converters in South Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia reported thin returns on formaldehyde and acetic acid production, with buyers pushing back on supplier offers at the top of the recent range. Analysts described the rally as mainly logistics driven rather than tied to a wider feedstock cost increase, since coal and natural gas prices moved much less than methanol over the same window.

For procurement teams in formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE, biodiesel, and MTO supply chains, the near term action is to secure November and December methanol coverage before further Gulf shipping disruption pushes landed values higher. Chemical converter buyers in China, India, and Southeast Asia should confirm forward contracted volumes while the current risk premium is being resisted by spot buyers. Biodiesel blenders in the United States and Europe should stress test fourth quarter cost models against a scenario where Asian methanol CFR firms toward 0.75 dollars per kilogram if Iranian exports stay offline through the end of the year.
