India’s fertiliser supply remains robust and well above demand, the Department of Fertilizers has confirmed, countering recent reports of shortages. Data from the Rabi 2025–26 season and early 2026 indicate that availability exceeds requirements across all major fertiliser categories.
End-of-Rabi figures show urea stocks at 257.59 LMT against a requirement of 196.06 LMT, DAP at 75.40 LMT versus 53.43 LMT, MOP at 19.64 LMT versus 15.69 LMT, NPK at 117.44 LMT versus 82.38 LMT, and SSP at 50.10 LMT against 31.19 LMT. Supplies for the current financial year remain similarly high, with urea at 69.33 LMT compared to 18.17 LMT required, DAP at 22.78 LMT against 5.90 LMT, MOP at 8.32 LMT versus 1.73 LMT, NPK at 52.75 LMT against 7.46 LMT, and SSP at 25.60 LMT against 3.30 LMT.

Looking ahead to Kharif 2026, the assessed fertiliser requirement is 390.54 LMT, with around 180 LMT already in opening stock, representing 46 percent of the anticipated need. This pre-season level is notably higher than the typical 33 percent and reflects improved advance planning and logistics management.

State officials are working closely with the Department of Fertilizers to monitor stocks and distribution, taking action to prevent diversion, hoarding, or black marketing. On the international front, Indian Missions are securing alternate supply sources, and around 25 LMT of urea has been obtained through global tendering. Domestic urea production continues with steady natural gas supply, supplemented by additional LNG and RLNG as required.
Despite global urea prices exceeding INR 4,000 per bag, the government maintains subsidised rates of INR 266.5 per 45 kg bag, ensuring affordability for farmers. The Department of Fertilizers emphasizes that India’s fertiliser system remains resilient, adequately stocked, and effectively managed, with measures in place to guarantee uninterrupted access for the upcoming season.
