  • Indian 5 percent broken parboiled rice held at 378 to 384 dollars per tonne through October 9
  • Thai 5 percent broken rice climbed to 465 to 468 dollars per tonne on flood concerns
  • Vietnam 5 percent broken rice eased to about 420 to 430 dollars per tonne on weak demand
  • Indian rice output was set to fall for the first time in a decade on poor rainfall
  • Vietnamese first nine month rice exports forecast to fall 6.1 percent to 6.4 million tonnes

Asian rice markets moved higher through the first full week of October 2026, with Indian export values trading at the highest level in more than a year and Thai parboiled rice benchmarks lifting on flood concerns in central and northern Thailand. On October 1, Indian 5 percent broken parboiled rice was quoted at about 378 to 384 United States dollars per tonne, up from 375 to 381 dollars the prior week, while 5 percent broken white rice traded at 377 to 382 dollars per tonne. By October 9, the parboiled rice range held steady at 378 to 384 dollars per tonne as a weaker rupee offset rising paddy costs tied to crop supply worries.

Indian supply conditions remained the central support. Industry officials said Indian rice production is set to fall this year for the first time in a decade, with the drop potentially the steepest in nearly 20 years, after below normal rainfall during the grain filling and maturation window hit yields in major producing states. Flooding in parts of the growing belt added to the concern after an earlier dry spell. Traders in Mumbai said crop conditions were worsening rather than improving through the opening of October.

The Thai market shifted upward through the week. Thai 5 percent broken rice was offered at about 460 dollars per tonne at the start of the month, holding unchanged from the previous week, before climbing to about 465 to 468 dollars per tonne by October 9 on flooding worries that threatened the late second crop harvest in central Thailand. Vietnam benchmark 5 percent broken rice was quoted at about 420 to 430 dollars per tonne, down from 430 dollars the prior week, as weak external demand offset tighter domestic availability. Vietnamese agriculture authorities forecast that first nine month rice exports would fall by about 6.1 percent to 6.4 million tonnes, with export value down about 10.9 percent to 3.1 billion dollars.

Trade and freight signals shaped the picture. A Kolkata trader said buyer demand eased slightly during the first week of October as higher ocean freight rates pushed purchasers to delay orders. Bangladeshi rice prices stayed elevated and faced further upside as recent oil price increases lifted on farm and transport costs. African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian buyers continued to track Indian offers for the balance of the fourth quarter.

For procurement teams in food distribution, government procurement, and institutional kitchen supply chains, the near term action is to secure November and December rice coverage while Indian offers hold within the current range. Buyers in Africa and the Middle East should test Thai parboiled rates as flood news develops. Food companies and quick service kitchens should stress test fourth quarter budgets against a scenario where Indian 5 percent broken parboiled rice firms toward 390 dollars per tonne if Indian production estimates are trimmed further in the next official round.
