The lack of demand for epoxy and vinyl intermediates in Europe and North America, as well as rising Asian exports, have put pressure on chemical operations, the core electrochemical unit (ECU) prices for merchant chlorine and caustic soda are also rising.

Sales of vinyl and chlor alkali products for the third quarter of 2022 reached USD 1,263.5 million, which was previously valued at USD 1,062.4 million in 2021. Chlor alkali products and vinyl sales increased mostly as a result of higher prices, which was only partially offset by 17 percent lower volumes. Compared to the third quarter of 2021’s segment earnings of USD 263.0 million, the third quarter of 2022’s segment earnings were USD 253.9 million.

The segment’s earnings fell by USD 9.1 million primarily as a result of lower volumes, higher raw material, and operating costs, particularly higher electricity, and natural gas prices, which were only partially offset by higher prices across all products with the exception of vinyl intermediates, which saw a decline.

Depreciation and amortisation expenses totaled USD 121.1 million in the third quarter of 2022 for chlor alkali products and vinyl, compared to USD 116.7 million in the same period, the previous year.
