India commences with an anti-dumping investigation concerning Chinese thermoplastic polyurethane imports

Thermoplastic Polyurethane Imports

India has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from China, spearheaded by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, following claims from Indian company Covestro. The latter alleges that TPU products imported from China are inflicting damage on the domestic industry. The scrutiny encompasses polyester-type and polyether-type TPU, while explicitly excluding polycaprolactone-type TPUs from the investigation.

The dumping investigation spans from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023, with the injury investigation periods covering three spans: from April 2019 to March 2020, from April 2020 to March 2021, and from April 2021 to March 2022. In China, TPU is a prominent application for methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), utilized in producing various items like cushions, car seats, and footwear, as well as adhesives and sealants. The potential implications of this case on the Chinese MDI market remain unremarked upon by market participants at this juncture.
