Base oil includes naphthenics and Group I, II and III paraffinic base oils. All these oils have specific properties making them ideal for certain applications. These oils are produced via the extraction and treatment of high-viscosity material from narrow distillation cuts of vacuum gas oil. Itis the main component in any lubricant; however, the oil's quality and viscosity are different based on the application and the atmosphere.

Base oil dictates the categorisation of industrial lubricants based on the base oil they contain, for instance; mineral oil; synthetic oil; vegetable oils. A few of the important properties of base oil include viscosity limitation, oxidation, thermal stability, volatility, viscosity index, hydraulic stability, pour point, and aniline point (solvency measure with other materials and additives).

Base oils have four main physical properties, including pour point, viscosity, viscosity index (VI), and purity. Synthetic base oils are not direct crude oil processing products and have better functional properties that offer improved protection of machine and equipment part surfaces.

Base oils are mainly employed in the automotive industry, where it is added to engine oils, transmission and gear lubricants, and greases. There are other applications of the commodity, including in-process oils and general industrial lubricants, which are driving the market's growth.

Group, I base oils are usually used to make industrial, grease and gear lubricants. They are also great metalworking fluids and have good solvency properties. Furthermore, base oil does not classify as a fuel and are blendstock used in the formulation of various lubricating oils that find use in engines and other machinery. Mineral oils have wide usage because of their reasonable service capabilities and relatively lower costs.
